What is the mission of the Lakes and Parks Alliance?
LPA IS as a grass roots Non-profit organization with the mission of preserving the Kenilworth Trail.
The Southwest Light Rail Transit (SWLRT) threatens to destroy the trail and harm the surrounding lakes and parks of Minneapolis.
LPA is gathering resources in the fight against co-locating freight and light rail in the Kenilworth Corridor.
LPA does not question the importance of light rail in meeting the needs of a growing metropolitan area.
LPA questions co-location of the SWLRT alongside the existing freight railroad and believes there are viable options that have been overlooked for political reasons.
Your fellow citizens struggle to understand how our elected officials can agree to put a multi-modal transit system through one of the region's most peaceful environments, which is enjoyed by millions of visitors annually.
LPA maintains that this process is bad policy and bad planning driven by the promise of federal funding.
THE MET COUNCIL ITSELF has stated that building the swlrt as currently planned will generate more greenhouse gases than if the light rail were not built (i.e. this plan is worse than having more cars on the road)..
LPA is challenging the project as currently envisioned. Today the project RELIES ON a FAULTY Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).
WHILe incomplete and deficient, the EIS clearly states that there will be harm to the surrounding lakes and parks if the swlrt is co-located with freight rail.
LPA seeks to protect and preserve the legacy of Minneapolis green space and ensure that public policy conforms to current laws.
At this moment in time, the only thing that can preserve the Kenilworth Trail is a lawsuit that forces the Met Council to abide by the law and provide a DEIS for the current plan. the lpa is holding the met council and elected officials accountable.
PLEASE donate NOW TO PRESERVE OUR PRECIOUS PARKLAND AND TRANSIT OPTIONS THAT MEET THE NEEDS OF THE PUBLIC!
